Mozambique’s population is estimated at approximately 28 million people, 68% of whom live in rural areas. Despite steady economic growth over the last two decades, more than two-thirds of the population still live on less than US $1.90 a day and 55% live below the national poverty line.
Agriculture is mainly rain-fed and small-scale. Mozambique's major agricultural products include cotton, cashew nuts, sugarcane, tea, cassava, corn, rice, tropical fruits, beef, and poultry.
Farming is their main source of food and income, but productivity is low. Farmers and fishermen generally make enough to meet their households' basic food requirements, with a small surplus for sale in some cases. Incomes are low and most of the rural population survives at subsistence level.
Livestock production is also small scale and plays an important role in their livelihoods, food security and nutrition. The most common livestock include cattle and goats.
By investing in Mozambique agriculture, we are providing jobs and adding value to villages. Not only are we trying to improve the standard of living in the area, but we are trying to provide more opportunities for agricultural growth. We are currently working on projects such as improving the cattle genetics of different breeds and carcass weight which in turn will increase overall production and proceeds. We are exploring ways to improve exports and new farming opportunities, while also maintaining a sustainable agriculture future by being good stewards of the land.
